Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled after a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists of Plymouth and the (WAMP-A-NO-AG) Wampanoag people. Sarah Josepha Hale, campaigned for a national Thanksgiving Day to promote unity. She finally won the support of President Abraham Lincoln,who proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26. President Franklin Roosevelt issued a proclamation in 1942 designating the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.
The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating “thanksgivings” plural! Days…also plural, of prayer, thanking God for blessings such as rain and a good crop harvest
